La Tomatina!

La Tomatina in Bunyol, close to Valencia, is a tomato fiesta, during which all people present simply throw tomatoes at one another. Every year more than 30 thousand people come to this small town, where at the same time over 120 tons of tomatoes are being delivered!

Truck drivers begin throwing tomatoes at people and after a short while all people present join this madness, throwing tomatoes at one another, without selecting the targets too specifically. You need to make sure that you do not have too many clothes on you during that exercise…

If this is something you feel like fun and want to try it out, you need to come here on last Wednesday of August. You can reach Bunyol by bus or train and you must have with you some clothes to change into. You can leave them in local bars and restaurants – there is not a single hotel in the town.

If you only want to watch this very special event, forget it! You have no chance to do that – you will be dragged into the centre of the battle and will have no choice but to fight back, whether you like it or not .

At 1 p.m. there is a loud cannon shot, which announces the end of the battle. Right after that city fire brigade washes off the „ketchup” from the people, cars and streets, and the little town again becomes typically Spanish and „lazy”. Within an hour all streets of the city are cleaned up and are filled again, along with all bars and restaurants, with people who have already cleaned themselves up and changed, so that the fiesta can go on in the form of street concerts and performances.
