Cartagena
Cartagena is placed some 50 km south of Torrevieja. An ancient city founded in 229 B.C. by Hasdrubal, brother of Hannibal, and named New Cartagena (Karthad Hadaszt).
Thanks to natural resources like silver and lead, the city started to grow. The same silver and lead were the reasons for many wars and conquests of the city over the centuries, which led to often changes of rulers of Cartagena.
Between V and VIII century the city was ruled by Vandals, Bisancium, Wizigots and Arabs.
